Originating from India and the Himalayan foothills
Hedychium gardnerianum is a lush-looking exotic even
without such a triumphant flowering display. Fragrant,
leafy, semi-tropical perennial herb up to 4-5 feet tall.
It is a robust plant with huge inflorescences,
Hedychium gardnerianum has bright yellow blooms with red-orange
stamens and a delicate fragrance. Flowers from July
through October. Flower heads are about a foot tall and
some 6 inches across. Long, bright green, lance-shaped
leaves, 20 cm long by 10 cm wide.
Hardiness zones 9-11, (5ºC/40ºF, -5ºC/25ºF) in Winter.
It prefers a warm, frost-free climate although it will
grow outside in temperate areas that have light,
infrequent frosts. For best results, provide a rich,
moist, well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade
and with protection from cold winds. In frost-prone areas,
either grow in containers or give Winter protection.
