A
variation of Chorisia speciosa is Chorisia ventricosa,
the Barriguda tree, is a tall decorative tree from the
baobab family that grows in some dry valleys near the
Andes. It grows up to 25 meters high and 10 meters wide.
Its pale pink flowers attract the eye.
The tree mostly blooms in autumn. The flowers are pale
pink and give a pleasant summer look to the giant tree.
The foliage is persistent in tempered climates and vivid
green. The flowers are more abundant than the leaves
during the blooming season. The trunk is grey and can be
relatively slim or very large. It is covered with large
grey spikes. It is easy to cultivate.
Hardiness zone 10 (1°C/35°F) in winter. Chorisia
ventricosa is not very resistant to frost. Under -5°C,
the plant dies. It is addapted to very dry conditions and
middle temperatures.
Keep your young plant away from strong winds, but always
give light and sun to it. It can be cultivated in a
glasshouse with a temperature over 15°C. Water regularly
when the tree is growing flowers, but reduce at the end
of summer and in winter.
