Cyrtostachys renda, the Lipstick Palm, is native of Asia. It grows well in subtropical and tropical regions. This palm will grow to about 3 meters high or smaller if grown in pot. It is a beautiful and very different looking palm, one of the most colourful.

The trunk is made up of many smaller stems each growing close to each other. They turn to a bright red early in age. The stems are slick and smooth. Its colour is so unique for a palm tree that it gave the plant its name. The palms are feather-like and green-yellowish to green. The flowers are hermaphrodite. The palm blooms all year long in tropical climates.

Hardiness zone 11 (4ºC/40ºF) in winter. The Lipstick Palm is very sensitive to temperatures under 10ºC/50ºF. The average conservation temperature should be about 28-36ºC. Idealy, it should never go under 20ºC. The palm’s needs make it difficult to grow in climates other than tropical or subtropical.

The Lipstick Palm can be grown in a hot glasshouse or veranda and inside in winter. It requires a lot of light and humidity. It needs to be watered regularly. Place it under a partial sun or a good source of light.

Fill the bottom of your pot with gravel and add garden soil. Top it with a good layer of humus. Plant your seeds at ½ inch deep. In summer, keep soil humid, but make sure to place a plate under the pot to eliminate the excess of water. Reduce watering in winter. Give your young plant fertilizer twice a month. Place-it under a good source of light, but no direct sun. Prevent the plant from being exposed to a temperature below 17ºC during growth. Growth should be pretty fast. Germination could take up to three months, but it could be more, don’t get discouraged.

Cyrtostachys renda, le Palmier Rouge à Lèvres, est natif d’Asie. Il pousse aisément en régions tropicales et subtropicales. Ce palmier peut atteindre 3 mètres de haut, ou moins s’il est cultivé en pot. Il est très beau et surtout très unique, un des plus colorés.

Le tronc est cespiteux, il se sépare à la base en plusieurs pousses. Le tronc devient rouge écarlate très vite. Il est lisse et luisant. Sa couleur est très différente de tous les autres palmiers et lui vaut son nom. Les feuilles du palmier sont pennées et vert jaunâtre à vert. Les fleurs sont monoïques. Le palmier fleurit toute l’année en climat tropical.

Zone de rusticité 11 (4ºC/40ºF) en hiver. C’est un palmier délicat qui est sensible aux températures sous 10ºC/50ºF. La température moyenne de conservation doit tourner autours de 28-36ºC. L’idéal est qu’elle ne descende pas sous 20ºC. La plante a des besoins tels qu’il sera plus difficile de la cultiver adéquatement dans un climat autre que tropical ou subtropical.

Le Palmier Rouge à Lèvres peut être cultivé en serre chaude ou en véranda et à l’intérieur en hiver. Il requiert beaucoup de lumière et d’humidité. Il a besoin d’être bien arrosé. Placez-le sous un soleil partiel ou une bonne source de lumière.

Utilisez un fond de gravier sur lequel vous déposez votre terre de jardin puis une couche de terreau sur le dessus. Plantez à ½ pouces de profondeur. L’été, gardez le sol humide, mais veillez à enlever l’excédant d’eau en plaçant une assiette sous votre pot. Réduisez l’apport en eau l’hiver. Donnez à votre plant un fertilisant 2 fois par mois. Placez-le sous une bonne lumière, mais pas un soleil direct. Évitez que la plante soit exposée à une température sous 17ºC durant la croissance. Celle-ci sera plutôt rapide, elle prendra plus ou moins 3 mois. La germination pourrait prendre plus de temps, n’abandonnez pas.
