Dypsis
leptocheilos, the Dypsis Darianii Palm, Teddybear Palm or
Redneck Palm, is native of Madagascar. It grows in
tropical and subtropical rainforests. This is one of the
most beautiful palms of Madagascar. It grows to a height
of 6 to 12 m.
The trunk is very different from most palms. It is made
up of white rings. The crown shaft has a distinctive brow
reddish material covering it. The foliage is evergreen
and consisting of large feather-like palms growing up to
10 meters long. The flowers are pale yellow and grow from
May to August.
Hardiness zones 9-11 (-5°C/25°F, 4°C/40°F) in winter.
It can tolerate occasional light frost. Ideal temperature
for cultivation is 27-32°C. It can be grown in pot and
is great in a veranda or indoors.
It grows best in acid to neutral soils. It is rather easy
to cultivate. It can tolerate full sun to light shade and
requires a moist and well-drained soil.
