Product Description

Pinus armandii originates from Central and Western China, also Southern Japan. An evergreen tree growing to 20 meters or more in the wild.

Its bark is blackish brown to grayish red brown, shallowly cracked or sometimes irregularly fissured, covered by thin and small scales. The bark on young stems is grayish brown, thin and smooth.

The leaves are deep green on dorsal surface, pale greenish white with 2 stomatal bands on ventural surface. Darker green than the Japanese variety and much hardier. It is in flower in June, and the seeds ripen in October. The flowers are monoecious, individual flowers are either male or female, but both sexes can be found on the same plant. Unique thin green cones.

Hardiness zones 5-7, (-15°C/5°F,-26°C/-15°F) in Winter. The tree prefers light sandy and medium loamy soils, requires well-drained soil and can grow in nutritionally poor soil. The tree prefers acid and neutral soils. It requires dry or moist soil and can tolerate drought. Requires sun, it cannot grow in the shade.

Germination

First, scarify the seeds. For faster germination, soak the seeds in slightly hot water for 24-48 hours, followed by 6 weeks cold stratification before sowing 1 inch deep. Keep damp soil, not soaking wet. Keep pot in warm situation 20°C/68°F, 24°C/75°F. Germination can take several months. It can be a lot more depending on their degree of unbroken dormancy, don't give up.

Scarification / Stratification

Seed coats may be so hard that they are impermeable to water. They need to be scratched or broken using a knife or sandpaper, in order to germinate. Chip the seeds with a sharp knife or make a few swipes with a sharp edged file or use sandpaper to allow moisture being more readily absorbed.
