Brachychiton acerifolius, commonly called the Illawara Flame Tree, is native of Australia and some parts of South Africa. This radiant tree can reach heights of 6-15 meters.
The Flame Tree blooms in spring and summer. Blooming can take as much as 8 years after growth before taking place. Surprisingly, the flowers are not quite as spectacular as the flaming red foliage. The semi-persistent foliage has an impressive red flashy tint. The large single trunk is grey-brown and harsh. Prune at the end of winter.
Hardiness zones 9-10 (-5°C/25°F, 1°C/35°F) in winter. The Flame Tree needs to be cultivated in a tempered or tropical climate.

| germination | Use any good rich garden soil that is acidic or neutral. This is a relatively easy plant to grow, since it does not require any pre-treatment. Place your plant under a direct sun and water regularly but keeping the soil moist is not necessary. Germination takes more time in tempered climates, don’t get discouraged. |
