Lilium Hybrides (Graines Lys) (En Mélange)
This is a mix of some of my other Lilies, with some undetermined oriental hybrid Lilies. Hybrid Lilies can be grown almost anywhere, including wild gardens, woodlands, among shrubs and herbaceous borders. They are also excellent cut flowers and ideal for pots. They come in a wide range of colors. Asiatic varieties have showy, upright facing blooms with 4-8 buds per stem. Oriental varieties are late flowering and have 6-10 exotic, sweet-scented blooms. The flowers are hermaphrodite, they have both male and female organs. Deciduous foliage. Lilies form a bulb. Lily bulbs never go fully dormant, so they must be treated carefully. Hardiness zones 3-7, (-37C/-35F, -15C/5F) in Winter. Use a soil well drained, rich in organic matter with a soil pH slightly acidic to neutral. Water regularly; do not overwater and do not allow the soil to dry out. It prefers an open free-draining humus-rich loamy soil with its roots in the shade and its head in the sun. It can grow in semi-shade.
More Information
Common name Fine Mixed Lily
Species Lilium ssp.
Germination This mix contains hypogeal, seed sprouts as a bulb at warm temperatures, requiring a period of cold afterwards to send up its first true leaf; as well as easy epigeal, warm germinators. Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep and keep moist. A plastic sandwich bag placed loosely over each pot will keep moisture in and cut down maintenance for a few weeks. Place in warm temperature, 70-75øF, germination of warm germinators will start at about 1-3 weeks and continue over several weeks. After 6-8 weeks, remove seedlings that have sent up a shoot to another flat. Place the remaining seeds in cold temperatures, in the refrigerator, -4øC to 4øC for 3 months and back to warm; it will send up its first true leaf in 1-2 weeks. Lily seeds are not difficult to germinate indoors and to grow under lights. The most important requirement for the planting mix is drainage while retaining moisture. Use a combination of sand, soil, vermiculite, perlite and whatever organic matter is at hand to produce a light, airy mix which retains moisture but allows good drainage.
