Zingiber Rubens or commonly known as Bengal Ginger is native to Eastern Himalayas and Northeast India. Its red inflorescences sit at ground level. They produce beautiful orchid-like flowers. Flowers have a showy lip. The stems grow up to 6 feet tall. Flowering occurs over a month with individual flowers appearing from the bracts successively. Each flower blooms for about 4 to 5 days. The seed capsules are used as a spice in India. The flowers are said to be edible. Water regularly. Do not overwater. Tolerates cool winters. The plant becomes dormant in winter. Hardiness zone: 8-11
