Astrophytum asterias is a species native to the state of Tamaulipas in Mexico where it grows at an altitude of less than 200m and the County of Starr Texas in the United States near the Rio Grande.
The plant is sometimes called sea urchin cactus because it evokes a "skeleton" of sea urchin. It is quite popular with collectors of cacti because of its geometric shape and perfect symmetry.
