Details
Lilium concolor strictum or the Morning Star Lily, is a rarely seen species of great elegance from Northeast Asia. It can grow from 30 cm to a slender 90 cm high (1 to 3'). Good for general landscaping and for the mid Summer garden. In June and July, it develops upright flowers in clusters of up to 10 or more, upfacing, 5-7 cm (2 to 3")of a fiercely lovely vermillion. It will flower in as little as 2 years from seeds. The flowers are hermaphrodite, they have both male and female organs. Deciduous foliage. Lily bulbs never go fully dormant, so they must be treated carefully. Hardiness zones 4-9, (-32øC/-25øF, -5øC/25øF) in Winter. This Lily likes lots of sunlight, average soil, they tolerate a wide range of pH, and prefer moderately moist conditions. It should receive 6 or more hours of full sun. Water regularly; do not overwater. It thrives even in poor soil, although most Lilies benefit from an amended soil that is loose and well drained.

Germination This Lilium has immediate epigeal germination, they are easy warm germinators. Plant seeds about 6mm (1/4 inch) deep and keep moist. A plastic sandwich bag placed loosely over each pot will keep moisture in and cut down maintenance for a few weeks. Place in warm temperature, 21-24øC (70-75øF), germination will start at about 3-12 weeks. Lily seeds are not difficult to germinate indoors and to grow under lights. The most important requirement for the planting mix is drainage while retaining moisture. Use a combination of sand, soil, vermiculite, perlite and whatever organic matter is at hand to produce a light, airy mix which retains moisture but allows good drainage.
