Details
Phoenix Sylvestris is the little brother of the Dactylifera; it looks the same in almost every way, but is shorter at maturity. Just as great, the spectacular ornamental Wild Date is rare to see and just as easy to grow. It is also named Silver Date Palm, Sugar Date Palm, Khajuri Silver or wild date palm. This is an Indian and Pakistani species. This species looks a lot like a slightly ?stiff-leaved' PhoenixCanariensis. In fact, it is often confused for one, or vice versa, however it is much more slender, and faster growing. This palm tree has also been called a Toddy palm, because the sweet dates are harvested and fermented into an alcoholic drink called Toddy. This palm is very tall, up to 35-50 ft high (10.67-15.24 m) and slender 10-12 in (25.4-30.48 cm) in diameter, with a solitary knobby trunked. It typically has a swollen base and no crown shaft. The Sylvestris palm has an incredibly full and dense crown of long curving silvery blue-green leaves. The canopy consists of about 100 pinnate, curving leaves, 9-12 ft long. They are composed of leaflets that tend to be plumose around the petiole. The petioles (leafstalks) are armed with long spines. They really show their blue color in hot, dry climate. This palm tends to make a "skirt" of its old dead leaves, unless you maintain the palm with trimming. Around spring time, dioecious flower stalks appears among the leaves. They are very discreet and produce an oblong fruit, yellow to orange drupe of about 0.75 in (1.9 cm) long, containing a single large seed with a thin layer of edible flesh. Hardiness zones: 9 ? 11 (-5c/25f, 4c/40f). The stunning Silver Date grows faster than most other date palms, and can endure drought and frost. It looks best when planted in full sun. Plant this palm in any well draining soil and provide deep occasional watering. The Silver Date also makes a great container specimen when young and they can thrive in other confined areas in urban landscapes. Indoor, plant it in a deep pot that provides plenty of room for the taproot and provide plenty of light. This palm is an excellent choice for those who live in hot and cold areas. It is slightly less hardy to cold than PhoenixCanariensis and about as unhappy in warm, humid climates as well. It is a great desert landscape palm and quite drought tolerant. It does require maintenance (trimming), but is worth it for those who love Phoenix palms.

Germination If the Phoenix Sylvestris seeds appear dry, soak them in warm water for 1-3 days. For sowing, use peat, coco fiber, or similar media. It should be moist but not wet. Mix the seeds with the moist compost and place into a clear plastic (Ziploc) bag, and seal it. Place them at a temperature around 25-30 C. No light is required for germination. Check weekly for signs of activity by looking for white roots through the plastic. Ensure that the medium does not dry out. The seeds can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 years (or more) to germinate; however, most will sprout after 4-6 weeks. After the seeds have sprouted, plant each in a tall, narrow pot using a well-drained medium and place in ample light, but not in full sun. They have deeper roots than might be expected before emergence, so use deep containers. Aim to keep the soil moist (but not wet) at all times, feed and pot on as required. Germination can take longer. Be patient!
