Details
Lilium formosatum pricei is a charming, dwarf, miniature version from Ta‹wan, of the type species, ideal for a sheltered spot in your rock garden or makes a beautiful pot plant for the greenhouse and grows to 6-18 inches. Lilies grow bulbs. Lily bulbs never go fully dormant, so they must be treated carefully. Fragrant, large, white trumpet flowers bloom late in the season on this easy-to-grow Lily. It usually blooms the first year out in the garden but at a short height. The petal reverses are flushed rosy purple. It is in flower from August to October, and the seeds ripen from October to November. The flowers are hermaphrodite, they have both male and female organs, and are pollinated by bees. The flowers diffuse a delicious sweet perfume. Hardiness zones 5-9, (-26øC/-15øF, -5øC/25øF) in Winter. Bulbs grow best in areas of moderate Winter temperature, in the 30's to about zero. Success can also be experienced in colder climates where there is a reliable snow cover or where mulch has been applied after the ground begins to freeze in the Fall. Sprouts survive most Winters with additional protection. Light frost usually does no harm. In a warm climate the plant grows continually and will grow happily in pots in a conservatory. Use a well-drained soil, rich in organic matter with a soil pH slightly acidic to neutral. Water regularly; do not overwater and do not allow the soil to dry out. This Lily will tolerate sun to partial shade.

Germination This Lilium has immediate epigeal germination, they are easy warm germinators. Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep and keep moist. A plastic sandwich bag placed loosely over each pot will keep moisture in and cut down maintenance for a few weeks. Place in warm temperature, 70-75øF, germination will start at about 3-12 weeks. Lily seeds are not difficult to germinate indoors and to grow under lights. The most important requirement for the planting mix is drainage while retaining moisture. Use a combination of sand, soil, vermiculite, perlite and whatever organic matter is at hand to produce a light, airy mix which retains moisture but allows good drainage.
