Details
Foxglove Candy Mountain is totally unique as it is the first upward facing foxglove grown from seed. This unusual characteristic enables you, the hummingbirds and the bees, to peep inside the stunning rose pink blooms and view their delightful freckled throats, which appear all the way around the stems, adding greatly to its ornamental appeal. This unique feature allows you to view the beautiful flowers from above instead of having to get down on your knees to see their true beauty. The Rose pink blossoms are produced on very strong, strictly upright stems. It forms large rosettes of soft, downy green leaves, from which the numerous flower spikes emerge. In early summer, the rose pink flowers completely surround the strong flower spikes, creating a sensational dramatic effect at the back of the border! As with other biennials/short-lived perennials in favorable sites, these plants can remain in the garden for many years through self-seeding. Simply perfect towards the middle or back of your perennial or cottage garden borders. All foxgloves are charming, but the 'Candy Mountain' is downright flamboyant and, when planted in drift, the erect 3-4.5 ft (90-140cm) tall and 1-2ft (12?-24?) wide plants create a riot of rosy pink color from June through August. The pink blossoms specked with white and black begin opening from the bottom of the flower stalk and work their way upward. They are ideal for cutting and they need very little care. Hardiness Zones : 4-9 (-32c/-25f, -5c/25f). This plant is extremely weather tolerant, and prefers acidic, moist, well-drained soil enriched with humus. Partial shade is best, although it will grow in full sun. To encourage plants to act as perennials, cut all flowering stalks back to basal foliage before seed sets. However, if allowed to go to seed, plants will act more as biennials and will, in optimum growing conditions, freely self-seed. Make sure to keep constant soil moisture when plants are in bloom to elongate the blooming period.

Germination The sowing period is from January to May. Sow the seeds on the surface of a good, free-draining, damp, seed compost and place them at a temperature of 18-29C (65-85F). Lightly cover the seeds with vermiculite. Place them in a propagator or a sealed container inside a polythene bag until after germination, which usually takes 14-30 days. Do not exclude light, as this helps germination.

Transplant the seedlings when they are large enough to handle into trays or in 7.5cm (3in) pots. Gradually acclimatize the plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks, before planting them outside, after all risk of frost has past, planting them 45-60cm (18-24in) apart. An early sowing will occasionally produce flowers in the same year. Germination can take longer. Be patient!
