Teucrium Marum
Teucrium Marum, commonly known as Cat Thyme is not a thyme as its name suggests. It is an evergreen sub-shrub. It has thyme-like leaves but its scent is different from thyme. The leaves have a musky fragrance.
Teucrium Marum is native to the West Mediterranean. It grows on dry hills and scrubby landscapes up to 30 cm.
Cat Thyme flowers in summer, between July and September. The flowers are pink and appear as a one sided spike.
It contains a terpene component that causes sexual arousal cats, hence the name of the Cat Thyme. The plant is also used as a homeopathic remedy.
The plant prefers full sun, moist and well-drained soil. Teucrium Marum is attractive to bees and other pollinating insects. The plant is self-fertile.

The whole herb is aromatic, deobstruent, diuretic, nervine, stimulant, stomachic and tonic. It is used in the treatment of gallbladder and stomach problems. |
| Germination | Sow seeds on surface of soil and cover with plastic wrap. Germination in 10-20 days. Sow spring in a cold frame and only just cover the seed. Prick out the seedlings into individual pots when they are large enough to handle and plant them out in the summer if they are large enough. Otherwise, grow them on in a cold frame for the winter and plant them out in the following spring. Division in early spring. |
