Details
Drosera Derbyensis belongs to the woolly sundew family. Woolly sundews are native to areas of Australia where it is hot and humid in summer and hot and dry in winter. Drosera Derbyensis is also called Octopus plant because it as so many leaves or arms. This sundew is a fibrous-rooted tropical perennial, herb. In their natural environment, these plants die back in the dryer season, although in cultivation, they will keep growing if kept wet. The numerous wooly erect stems, with a solitary terminal leafy yellow-orange rosette with pink gel hair around, emerge in the middle of the plant and as they get older they start to drop to the side. The flowers are born on a long stem above the leaves. This plant blooms from March to June. The little pink flowers are born on an inflorescence with woolly hairs. This plant loves to grow in white sand. Hardiness zones: 11 (4c/40f) Depending on your climate, you may need to grow this plant sundew in a warm terrarium with strong fluorescent lights. Unlike other tropical sundews, all woolly sundews prefer soil that is barely damp. Keep the water level no higher than 1/4 inch, and allow the water dish to dry for a day or two before watering again. For best results, keep this plant between 75ø - 90øF and in strong light throughout the day. This plant does not require winter dormancy, but will go dormant if kept cool and in low light. The Paradoxa has a cold tolerance to 60øF so it should be grown as a houseplant in colder climate.

Germination Drosera Paradoxa seeds will usually germinate in 30-90 days. The seeds will only germinate with light. Sow Drosera Paradoxa seeds on the surface of a Peaty seed sowing mix at about 15øC. Some people have been having great germination of petiolaris hybrids using milled long fibered Sphagnum, still getting germination eight weeks after the first seed germinated, while growing them on a south facing windowsill. Germination can take from 2 weeks to 2 years! Please be patient, you won?t regret it.

Important:

In winter (October-April), the plants must be placed close to a window (l5 to 20 cm) and at the same level. Keep the temperature between 15-20 øC. When the frost ends (May-October), you can leave the plants outside and place them on an east oriented windowsill. In summer, with a temperature from 20 to 30 øC, they can stay anywhere outside.

Petiolaris Complex:

A group of tropical Australian species which live in constantly warm but irregularly wet conditions. This group has developed special strategies to cope with the alternately drier conditions. Many species, for example, have petioles densely covered in trichomes, which maintain a sufficiently humid environment and serve as an increased condensation surface for morning dew.
