Aechmea recurvata is a species from the bromeliad family. It is a plant from South America and Mexico. This medium size plant can grow to a height of 60 cm. It is a beautiful plant that lives in tropical regions. It is an excellent and unique interior plant. The centerpiece of the aechmea recurvata is its only flower. The inflorescence protrudes above the foliage and is quite spectacular. It can measure 20 cm high and bears different tints of red. The foliage is constituted of 30 cm long rigid and curving leaves. It is an evergreen plant. The foliage will have colors ranging from yellow, green and red. The ends of the leaves and the sides are spiky, be careful. Hardiness zones 10-11 (1ºC/35ºF, 4ºC/40ºF) in winter. Keep the plant indoors for winter. It fears temperatures below 15ºC. When growing outside, keep the plant under the sun but with a good shade. A sun that’s too hot can burn the foliage. The plant needs a lot of light if kept inside. Watering should be done no more than once a week.

Germination Use any good garden soil that is neutral and use a fertilizer rich in potassium to encourage flowering once a month. Plant seeds at ¼ inches deep. The soil must be well drained. Water abundantly but only once a week. Germination will happen 1 to 3 weeks after planting. It will take longer in colder climates. Don’t get discouraged.
