Pachypodium gaeyi is a bizarre and beautiful species from Southwest Madagascar. One of the tree-like species. It makes a bold statement when planted in the landscape, but works equally as well as patio or houseplant. This moderately fast grower can normally grow to a height of 8-12 feet, or more with optimal conditions, when planted as a landscape specimen. It has a smooth, silver trunk, covered with half inch long stout spines. When not dormant, it is crowned with long, narrow, dark green leaves with undulating margins and a red mid-vein. Mature landscape specimens will bloom profusely. The flowers are large, white with yellow throat, sweet scented. Hardiness zones 9-11, (4°C/40°F,-5°C/25°F) in Winter. Protect it from frost, or keep it in container. It will lose leaves and go dormant if kept outside in Winter. Pachypodium can be grown in full sun to light shade. Regular water when the plant has leaves, else occasional water. Use a potting mix consisting of 2 parts sand to 1 part peat moss to 1 part loam with small gravel added for increased drainage.
