Thymus serpyllum
Le serpolet (Thymus serpyllum) ou thym serpolet est un sous-arbrisseau de la famille des Lamiacées appartenant au genre Thymus. C'est une plante aromatique basse, d'environ 10 cm de hauteur, et s'étendant jusqu'à 50 cm de largeur ; elle est tapissante, aux tiges radicantes aux nœuds, aux très petites feuilles opposées ovales ou lancéolées, aux courtes hampes florales dressées. De juin à septembre, son feuillage aromatique vert à reflets pourprés sous le soleil disparaît littéralement sous une nuée de petites fleurs bleues groupées en capitules terminaux, plus carminés dans la variété Coccineus. Après la floraison, (juin à octobre) viennent les fruits formés de quatre petits akènes.
C'est une plante des zones ensoleillées, broussailles, prés secs, rochers, dunes, jusqu'à 3000 m d'altitude.

| Usage thérapeutique | Through distillation, it is a source of oil of Serpolet that is used in herbal medicine. Properties: Anthelmintic; Antirheumatic; Antiseptic; Antispasmodic; Carminative; Deodorant; Diaphoretic; Disinfectant; Disinfectant; Expectorant; Sedative; Tonic. The leaves, and especially the essential oil contained in them, are antiseptic, deodorant, disinfectant and expectorant. The plant can be used fresh at any time of the year, or it can be harvested as it comes into flower and either be distilled for the oil or dried for later use. | Germination | Sow the dust-like seeds on the surface of dampened, sterilized seed starting mix under bright light with bottom heat. Keep watering to a minimum, as thyme seedlings are prone to damping off. When seedlings are large enough, harden them off and transplant to the garden or to containers spacing them at 23-38cm (9-15") apart. |
