L'Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) est une plante indienne de la famille des Solanaceae. Elle fait partie de la pharmacopée traditionnelle de l'Inde: l'Ayurveda.
Dans un essai clinique publié en 2009, l'Ashwagandha a montré un effet thérapeutique significativement supérieur à la psychothérapie dans le traitement de l'anxiété. Le groupe test utilisant cette plante a présenté également une amélioration de la concentration, de la vitalité et globalement de la qualité de vie.
Il est cependant à noter que la pharmacopée française édition 2012 a mise la racine de Withania somnifera sur la "liste B des plantes médicinales utilisées traditionnellement en l'état ou sous forme de préparation et dont les effets indésirables potentiels sont supérieurs au bénéfice thérapeutique attendu".
