Eucalyptus grandis also known as rose gum pink or flooded gum is a tree of medium to large size, with rough grey-brown bark at the base and a white bark extending above. It can reach up to 50 m (160 ft) tall. Rose gum is one of the most productive plantation eucalypts. E. grandis grows in Australian coastal and sub-coastal areas from Newcastle in New South Wales northwards to west of Daintree in Queensland. The glossy dark green leaves are stalked and lanceolate. They are 15 cm long and 3 cm wide. White flowers appear in mid-August to mid-November. Foraging insects, particularly honeybees, pollinate the flowers. Eucalyptus grandis is an attractive and fast growing tree. It is easy to grow and highly sought outside Australia for its timber and pulp. As its name suggests, rose gum has heartwood that is pink to red-brown in colour, with paler sapwood. Eucalyptus grandis is harvested for panelling, flooring and joinery. It also has decorative applications in high quality furniture. Eucalyptus grandis is drought sensitive. It tolerates frosts in the 0ø to -5øC range as well as salt-laden coastal winds.
