Echinops Sphaerocephalus

Echinops sphaerocephalus, commonly known as the Great Globe-Thistle, is a bold and architectural perennial prized for its striking spherical flower heads and silvery-green foliage. Native to Europe and western Asia, it is a favorite in both ornamental gardens and pollinator-friendly landscapes.

This robust plant typically reaches 100 to 150 cm in height and produces dramatic, globe-shaped flower heads up to 5 cm in diameter. The blooms, ranging from silvery-white to pale blue, appear in midsummer and attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects in abundance.

Echinops sphaerocephalus thrives in poor, well-drained soils and full sun. It is drought-tolerant, low-maintenance, and deer-resistant—making it ideal for xeriscapes, naturalistic borders, or wildflower gardens.

Excellent for fresh or dried flower arrangements, the Great Globe-Thistle adds texture and contrast to mixed plantings while supporting biodiversity.

Can I grow Great Globe-Thistle from seeds?

Yes, it can be grown easily from seed. Sow in spring or autumn, either indoors or directly outdoors. Germination usually takes 2–3 weeks in warm, moist conditions.

Is Echinops sphaerocephalus invasive?

While it spreads by self-seeding in suitable conditions, it is generally not invasive. Deadheading spent flowers can help control unwanted spreading.

How long does it take to flower?

Plants started from seed may flower in their second year. Once established, they reliably bloom each summer and require minimal care.
