Lilium Canadense
Lilium canadense is one of the most elegant Lily species. The seeds have been wild collected in Quebec and New Brunswick. It is a magnificent tall perennial woodland Lily, growing to a height of 2-5 feet tall. Flowers are nodding, flared and trumpet-shaped, from yellow to orange-red with dark spots. This graceful Lily blooms in late June or early July, producing up to 15-20 fragrant flowers per plant, 2-3" wide, with 3 petals and 3 sepals which recurve upward from the nodding flowers. The flowers are hermaphrodite, they have both male and female organs. Deciduous foliage, leaves 15 cm long; lanceolate, in whorls of 4 to 10, with veins beneath. Lilies form a bulb. Hardiness zones 3-8, (-37øC/-35øF, -10øC/15øF) in Winter. Grow on in full sun to dappled shade in any good garden soil with adequate drainage. Prefers an acidic, moist, well-drained soil such as a sand-peat moss-loam mix with a gravelly bottom. Water regularly; do not overwater. It can be found mostly in slightly dry, sunny areas.

Germination Germination is hypogeal; seed sprouts as a bulb at warm temperatures, requiring a period of cold afterwards to send up its first true leaf. Lily bulbs never go fully dormant, so they must be treated carefully. Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep and keep moist. A ziplock bag placed loosely over each pot will keep moisture in. Place in warm temperature, 70-75øF, for 9-12 weeks. Then place in cold temperatures, in the refrigerator, -4øC to 4øC, for 3 months and back to warm; it will send up its first true leaf in 1-2 weeks. Lily seeds are not difficult to germinate indoors and to grow under lights. The most important requirement for the planting mix is drainage while retaining moisture. Use a combination of sand, soil, vermiculite, perlite and whatever organic matter is at hand to produce a light, airy mix which retains moisture but allows good drainage.
