Cortaderia selloana 'Pink', commonly known as Pink Pampas Grass, is a stunning ornamental grass native to South America. Known for its dramatic, feathery pink plumes, this variety of pampas grass adds an elegant and striking touch to gardens and landscapes. It is a popular choice for its bold, eye-catching appearance and versatility in various garden settings.
The plant features long, slender, green leaves that grow in dense clumps. In late summer and fall, it produces large, soft, pink flower plumes that stand tall above the foliage, creating a dramatic contrast against the greenery. The plumes can reach up to 10 feet (3 meters) in height, creating a spectacular focal point in any garden. The pink coloration of the plumes is especially striking and makes this cultivar stand out from other pampas grass varieties.
Cortaderia selloana 'Pink' is a fast-growing perennial that thrives in full sun and well-drained soils. It is relatively low-maintenance and can tolerate a wide range of soil types, as long as they are not overly wet. While it is drought-tolerant once established, regular watering is recommended during dry periods to maintain its lush appearance. This grass is also tolerant of coastal conditions and can withstand salty air, making it a great option for seaside gardens.
Pink Pampas Grass is often used as a statement plant in garden beds, borders, and large landscapes. Its tall, feathery plumes make it perfect for creating dramatic focal points or for planting as a natural screen or privacy hedge. It is also commonly used in floral arrangements, as the plumes make stunning cut flowers that retain their beauty for an extended period.
Cortaderia selloana 'Pink' can grow up to 8-10 feet (2.5-3 meters) tall, with a spread of about 4-6 feet (1.2-1.8 meters). It is best suited to warmer climates and may not tolerate frost. In colder regions, it can be grown as an annual or in containers that can be brought indoors during winter. Pruning is recommended in late winter or early spring to remove dead foliage and promote new growth.
This cultivar is a wonderful addition to any garden, providing a vibrant splash of color and texture. Its graceful plumes and bold form make it an excellent choice for adding drama and visual interest to landscaping designs.

Germination | Do not cover the Cortaderia Selloana seeds with the germinating mix; press the seeds into the surface only. It may be helpful to mix the seed with a very fine sand to make it easier to sow. Water from the bottom so that the seed will not be washed away. Sow the Pampas seeds in flats, cover the flats with plastic to increase humidity and keep them at 70-74ø F. Maintain an even level of moisture. It is a good idea to start them in pots. The plants can be transplanted when they reach 3 in tall. If you start later than spring, you would need to keep the plant inside for the first winter to protect them from frost. Germination should occur in 10-20 days, but it may take longer. Be patient! Note: If you desire a 2 - 3 foot clump, use 100 seeds in a 2 ft diameter area when planting. From seed, it will take 2 or 3 years to bloom, but your patience is richly repaid by long-lived garden performance! |
