Echium Fastuosum

Echium fastuosum, also known as Pride of Madeira, is a spectacular evergreen shrub native to the island of Madeira. It is admired for its silvery-green, lance-shaped leaves and its breathtaking floral display — tall conical spikes packed with hundreds of vibrant violet-blue flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds in abundance.

This fast-growing plant can reach up to 1.5–2 meters in height and width, forming a rounded, bushy structure that makes it ideal as a dramatic focal point in Mediterranean or coastal gardens. Its flowering typically occurs in spring and early summer, adding months of brilliant color and pollinator activity to your landscape.

Echium fastuosum thrives in full sun and well-drained soils. It is drought-tolerant once established and well-suited for dry gardens or low-maintenance borders. While it prefers mild climates, it can withstand light frosts and may reseed in suitable environments, adding natural charm to your garden.

Highly valued by gardeners for its ornamental impact and ecological benefits, Pride of Madeira is both beautiful and beneficial — a stunning way to support pollinators while enhancing your outdoor space.

Species Echium fastuosum
Germination Sow inside from January to June. Sow the seeds in trays or pots, in a good seed compost, at 1/8in (3mm) deep, in a propagator or warm place to maintain an optimum temperature of 65-70F (18-20C). Germination usually takes 21-60 days. Transplant the seedlings when they are large enough to handle. Harden them off and plant them out, when all risk of frost has passed, about 30cm (12in) apart. Germination can take longer. Be patient!
