Lilium Pumilum
Lilium pumilum, also called Lilium tenuifolium or Coral Lily is a perennial native of China?s colder regions. This charming and short-statured Lily grows only 1 to 2 feet tall. Pumilum is a classic species that has stood the test of time, adding an air of understated elegance to the garden. As Summer reaches its peak the Lys becomes embellised in up to 30 pendent flowers of fiery scarlet, each one releasing a powerful perfume into the warm air. Graceful, durable and very long-lasting. The pretty 2" flowers are luminous coral-scarlet, recurved and produced in June and July. The waxy turk's-cap flowers are so lustrous they appear to have been lacquered. The flowers are hermaphrodite, they have both male and female organs. This deciduous Chinese native has grassy foliage of a medium green. Hardiness zones 3-8, (-37øC/-35øF, -10øC/15øF) in Winter. Lilium pumilum likes a soil well drained, rich in organic matter. Water regularly but do not overwater. It is very easy to grow and is resistant to basal rot, just don?t let it get dried out. This Lily will tolerate sun to partial shade and will tolerate almost full sun.

Species Lilium pumilum
Germination Germination is hypogeal; seed sprouts as a bulb at warm temperatures, requiring a period of cold afterwards to send up its first true leaf. Lily bulbs never go fully dormant, so they must be treated carefully. Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep and keep moist. A plastic sandwich bag placed loosely over each pot will keep moisture in and cut down maintenance for a few weeks. Place in warm temperature, 70-75øF for 9-12 weeks. Then place in cold temperatures, in the refrigerator, -4øC to 4øC for 3 months and back to warm; it will send up its first true leaf in 1-2 weeks. Lily seeds are not difficult to germinate indoors and to grow under lights. The most important requirement for the planting mix is drainage while retaining moisture. Use a combination of sand, soil, vermiculite, perlite and whatever organic matter is at hand to produce a light, airy mix which retains moisture but allows good drainage.
