Pimpinella Anisum
Pimpinella Anisum, commonly called Anise or Aniseed, is an annual, herbaceous plant in the family Apiaceae native to Egypt, Greece, Crete and Asia Minor. Anise grows up to 60 cm in height. Anise blooms from July to August. The plant has white floweres and a secondary feather-like leaflets of bright green, hence its name (of mediaeval origin), Pimpinella, from dipinella, or twicepinnate, in allusion to the form of the leaves. Aniseed is commonly employed in France, Spain Italy and South America in the preparation of cordial liqueurs. The liqueur Anisette added to cold water on a hot summer's day makes a refreshing drink. Its flavor has similarities with some other spices, such as fennel and liquorice. Hardiness zone: 8

Therapeutic uses Anise enjoys considerable reputation as a medicine in coughs and pectoral infections. In hard, dry coughs where expectoration is difficult, it is of much value. It is greatly used in the form of lozenges and the seeds have also been used for smoking, to promote expectoration. The volatile oil mixed with spirits of wine forms the liqueur Anisette, which has a beneficial action on the bronchial tubes, and for bronchitis and spasmodic asthma, Anisette, if administered in hot water, is an immediate palliative.
Germination Best sown outdoors after all danger of frost is past and when the soil is warm. When sowing outdoors, barely cover the seeds. Seeds can also be sown indoors at a temperature of 68-70øF (21øC) and with no cover.
Sow in individual pots as it resents being transplanted. Indoors and out, expect germination in 20-28 days.

Transplant when there are at least two sets of true leaves. Be careful with the roots when doing so, as transplanting may delay flowering and reduce seed yield. Thin or space seedlings 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) apart in full sun.
