Carica Papaya
Carica Papaya, the Pawpaw or Fruta Bomba, is a fruit tree that comes from humid and sub-humid tropical regions of South America and Central America, especially Mexico. It reaches up to 8 meters high and 4 meters wide. Its fruit, the papaya, is extremely popular. The papaya is a large berry weighting up to 1 kg. It?s a succulent fruit that has a yellow-orange pulp. The fruits grow attached to the trunk. They are yellow and green when mature. The Pawpaw is a tree that produces male or female flowers, but there are now hybrids that can have both sexes. The male trees have cream flowers and the female trees have white-yellowish flowers. The tree has a single trunk, with tender wood. The leaves are palmed and grow at the end of 60 cm long stems. The foliage is persistent. The tree produces more fruits when it is young; think about growing substitutes, their life span is shorter than most trees. Hardiness zones 10-11 (1øC/35øF, 4øC/40øF) in winter. It does not tolerate frost or long period of cold over 0øC. The Pawpaw tree is not adapted to live in a dry climate, unless it receives a lot of water. It prefers by far a tempered climate or a region with light frost. The soil for the Pawpaw must be rich, fresh and well-drained. Always keep the soil a little humid and the environment fresh. It needs sun, but must always stay away from wind.
